A Rainy Spring Wedding at Laural Mill: Cosette and Jack
Cosette and Jack met as biochemistry students at Indiana University and celebrated their wedding at Laural Mill in Heltonville, Indiana. Their outdoor ceremony brought a downpour, memorable photographs and a story Cosette wanted to share. In this interview, she explains how they chose the venue and what helped them enjoy their rainy wedding day. Laural Mill: Thank you so much for taking part in this real bride interview with us today, Cosette. We loved hosting your deeply memorable wedding day and can’t wait to hear more of the behind-the-scenes details. But first – your love story with Jack! How did you meet? And can you tell us about your first date the proposal?
Cosette: We met through IU because we were in the same major! We were both biochemistry majors and ended up being lab partners. It was funny because his childhood best friend was my college best friend, so she encouraged him to talk to me.
He proposed to me by taking me on a beautiful, long walk through campus and ended the walk by proposing at the Rose Well House. Both of our families came running out after he proposed which was a wonderful surprise. It was so meaningful and I loved how he proposed.

LM: That is so incredibly sweet, and we’re delighted that you shared your wedding with us so close to your Indiana University foundations as a couple. How did you find us at Laural Mill?
Cosette: I found Laural Mill through a friend who had been there. I really appreciated how they were flexible and worked out a time with me that I could come tour since I couldn’t go during their normal times.
LM: We were so happy to open our doors for you! How did you know this venue was ‘the one’?
Cosette: Once I got to the property I was amazed at how beautiful and elegant the venue was and how customizable it could become for my wedding wants/needs. I knew this venue was the one pretty much as soon as I left because of the kindness of the staff, how many amenities are included, and how beautiful the venue was. So much so I didn’t want to tour a single other venue! I knew I could have a great wedding planning and wedding day experience through working with this team.

LM: We loved the elegance of your wedding day! What was the inspiration behind your day? Did you have a specific theme or style?
Cosette: It was truly so fun and the best day ever. I wanted it to be elegant and springy, so my bridesmaid dresses were pink and yellow and my decor was all white, pink, yellow, greenery, and minimalistic. I honestly loved planning and thought it was so fun. My team of vendors were all so great and helped the day to run so smoothly.

LM: There were tons of amazing moments on your wedding day (hello dramatic downpour!), but which moments of the day were the biggest standout experiences for you?
Cosette: Getting ready with my bridesmaids was so fun and I loved every moment going up to the ceremony. I did a first look with my dad and one with my husband which was so special and taking pictures was so fun to be together with everyone!
It ended up POURING rain throughout the entire ceremony which was not what I was hoping for… but it actually ended up so fun and memorable and the pictures look like they’re from a movie so we have no regrets having it outside.
The reception was also so much fun! Our DJ was great and totally understood the assignment. All of us danced the rest of the night until it was time for us to leave which was a blast. Me and my husband did a “last dance” as well which was also so special and a sweet moment together to just be alone and reflect about the day. I truly loved every moment and it was so perfect!!

LM: Do you have any wedding planning advice that you’d like to share with other couples planning their day?
Cosette: My best advice is to do everything you can to make it as special and perfect as possible, but remember that there are always going to be factors out of your control. Prepare to let go and let the staff take care of you the day of, it will be amazing and special no matter what happens! This was hard advice for me to follow but wedding planning and the day of were so much less stressful because I was prepared for the day to be a wonderful special day even if everything didn’t go exactly perfectly.
We were so happy with all the amazing help we had that day and thought everything was so perfect even with the rain, which just made it magical! Thank you all for such an amazing venue experience!
Thank you to Cosette for sharing your Laural Mill experience. This is one couple’s wedding story, rather than a weather plan for every celebration. When you visit, ask the team to walk through the ceremony options for your guest count, the route between spaces and how a weather-related change would be communicated. Review our pricing, inclusions and published wedding dates, then choose a tour time at Laural Mill. A tour appointment does not reserve a wedding date; the team confirms wedding bookings after speaking with you.
